Bespoke Fire-Water Pump Solution for Challenging Offshore Locations

When the Isle of Man Government needed a dependable fire-water pumping solution to protect its critical oil-and-gas infrastructure at Douglas Battery Pier, it faced a significant logistical challenge. The only available site was constrained by its proximity to a busy public road, which separated the facility from the open sea. Traditional horizontal pump setups were impossible, yet the system needed to reliably deliver 1,035 m³/h at 12.5 bar, fully compliant with NFPA-20 standards.

Fischcon’s Innovative Solution

Fischcon developed a custom-engineered, 45-foot containerised fire-water pump set using diesel-hydraulic technology. The installation comprised:

  • Three submerged hydraulic lift pumps capable of 517 m³/h at 1.5 bar each, installed within stainless-steel caissons beneath the roadway
  • Three diesel-driven main pumps paired with hydraulic power packs, providing the essential pressure boost up to 12.5 bar
  • Comprehensive setup including fully redundant electric starters, built-in 20-hour fuel autonomy, integrated cooling systems, a jockey pump (250 l/min at 7 bar), and a foam-mixing unit (1-3%, 600–6,000 l/min)

Benefits: Dependable Fire Protection, Simplified Operation

  • Space Optimisation: Submerged pumps eliminated the need for extensive civil works, fitting the containerised setup into a compact area
  • Reliable Water Supply: Hydraulic lift technology guaranteed uninterrupted seawater access beneath the roadway
  • Autonomous Reliability: Diesel-driven technology and built-in redundancy ensured independence from external power sources during emergencies
  • Assured Performance: Achieved NFPA-20 standards with robust redundancy built into every aspect
  • Simplified Maintenance: Containerised design allowed for streamlined installation and easy ongoing maintenance
  • Integrated Firefighting Capability: Foam injection and jockey pump functionality reduced additional equipment needs, enhancing cost-efficiency
